Mindfulness Practice
One of the most effective and long-lasting treatments for mental and emotional pain and healing unhealthy patterns, is the practice of engaging in a regular, daily mindfulness practice. Mindfulness teaches us how to be in the present moment consciously, so we can be present with our bodies. So, we can feel our pain, touch our feelings and hear our thoughts without running away. It is possible to experience the joy of the present moment more regularly and use it to heal our relationship with ourselves. Mindfulness allows us to gently and lovingly become our own healers. I have been meditating for most of my life. Today, I practice in the Plum Village tradition, and it is what I will share with you. I find it to be the most effective practice for cultivating joy and compassion. It teaches us step by step how to be with and heal our strong and uncomfortable emotions, and more deeply, consciously and lovingly partner with our bodies and all that is a part of life.
Healthy Boundary Development
Healthy boundaries teach us how to care for ourselves and each other with respect and compassion. They are guidelines and practices for when and how to assist ourselves and each other, without attempting to control others, or allow ourselves to be controlled. They also teach us how to recognize our own boundary styles, so we know what to look for in our own behavior. I will take you through a course on what boundaries are and how to use them. If you are recovering from unhealthy/toxic relationships with yourself or others, this work is critical for your healing. And if you truly learn it and use it in your daily life, it will change your relationship with yourself and others for the better, for the rest of your life.
Compassionate Communication
Compassionate Communication teaches us how to discern the difference between our thoughts and our feelings when we're communicating. And it helps us learn to recognize when language is being used to control and harm ourselves and others. We begin to clearly see when our speech, both internal and external, is hateful and violent towards others and ourselves. And as we become more aware, we have the opportunity to make a different choice- can we choose a different way of communicating? Can we learn and hone the practice of deep listening and compassionate communication? If you grew up in an unhealthy home/environment or are in one now, I can help you recognize the harmful patterns of thought and speech you now have and then learn how to actively transform them. So, you can have healthy and more compassionate communication with yourself and others. I will introduce you to basic practices and help you integrate them into your life. This work has the capacity to radically change how you communicate with yourself and others, for the better, for life.
Holistic Health Education and Guidance
- what we eat and drink
- how we move or don't move our bodies
- how we think and communicate
- how we feel and our ability to care for our feelings- especially pain
- how connected we feel to others and life in general...
These are the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of holistic health. In our medicine we don't see or treat them as separate. We know they are constantly interacting, changing and affecting each other for better or worse. It is my job to bring these aspects into balance and harmony and to teach you how to do it too. All the while knowing, pain never goes completely away forever. We cannot know healing without pain. There is no lotus without the mud. If you really want to be healthy and learn how to be your own healer, learn how to stop reaching for the magic bullet and be with yourself and your life, right now. Appreciate all the needs you have that are met. Listen for the unmet needs, often guided by emotions and do your best to meet them. Enjoy the fact that all your needs are met right now. Listen to and care for you pain. Embrace your joy. Learn how to go with the flow. This is the essence of holistic health, recognizing and encouraging balance. Letting go... This is the magic of life.
Qi Gong Practice
Qigong means "life energy cultivation." There are many forms and practices, and they often include self-massage and acupressure. Qigong increases oxygen intake, calms the mind and heals the body. It can be used to target many different health complaints, as well as used for enjoyment, health maintenance and general flexibility and good health. Qi gong can be as much or as little of your treatment plan as you like. But I find it to be a very powerful healing tool. And one that can be used for the rest of your life to encourage and maintain good health.
